Terms of Service

Last updated July 17, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Gabriel Muldoon ("we", "us"), based in Michigan, United States, for your use of Steps to Fluency (the "Service"). The Service is available internationally; wherever you use it from, these terms apply, together with any consumer protections your local law guarantees you (see "Your consumer rights" below). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service. The Service is currently in beta.

The service

The Service is a language-learning tool that helps you read, look up words, build vocabulary, and review with spaced repetition. Because it's in beta, features may change, break, or be removed, and the Service is provided as is (see Disclaimers below).

Eligibility and your account

You must be at least 16 years old — or older if the law where you live sets a higher minimum age for agreeing to terms like these — to use the Service.

You need an account to use most features. You're responsible for keeping your login details secure and for activity under your account. Please provide accurate information and let us know if you suspect unauthorized use. Accounts are for individual people — don't share them.

Acceptable use

Please don't:

  • Break the law or infringe anyone's rights using the Service.
  • Upload content you don't have the right to use, or that is illegal or harmful.
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse-engineer, or gain unauthorized access to the Service or its infrastructure.
  • Use automated means to abuse limits or scrape the Service.

Your content

You keep ownership of the texts, words, and other content you add. To run the Service, you grant us a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to store and process your content — including sending relevant text to our AI provider (Anthropic) for lookups, translations, explanations, and practice sentences. This licence exists only to operate and improve the Service for you and ends when you delete the content or your account, except where limited retention is required for backups or legal compliance, and except for generic, non-identifying results cached to serve all users (for example, the dictionary form or translation of a common word). You are responsible for having the right to upload and use any content you add.

Third-party content

When you import from YouTube (links, transcripts) or paste text from elsewhere, you are responsible for complying with those sources' terms and any copyright law that applies to you locally. YouTube content is subject to YouTube's own terms.

AI-generated content

Word lookups, translations, glosses, grammar notes, and practice sentences are generated by AI and may be inaccurate or incomplete. Treat them as a learning aid, not as authoritative or professional advice, and double-check anything important.

Plans, limits, and payments

Some features and usage limits depend on your plan. During beta, paid plans are not yet available and the Service is provided free of charge. If we introduce paid plans, we'll show you the price, any applicable taxes, and the terms — including any cancellation and refund rights your local law gives you — before you buy.

Our intellectual property

The Service itself — its software, design, and branding — belongs to us. These terms don't grant you any rights to it beyond using the Service as intended.

Disclaimers

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the extent your local law allows this. We don't guarantee it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that AI outputs will be accurate. This is beta software.

Some jurisdictions don't allow certain warranty exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by the law that applies to you, we won't be liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the Service.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under your local law — for example, liability for fraud, gross negligence or intentional misconduct, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. Some jurisdictions don't allow limits on certain damages, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Your consumer rights

If you use the Service as a consumer, you benefit from any mandatory protections of the law of the country where you live. Nothing in these terms replaces, limits, or waives those protections — including your statutory rights and legal guarantees under EU, EEA, or UK consumer law where they apply to you.

Termination

You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from the Account page. We may suspend or end your access if you violate these terms or if we discontinue the Service; where reasonably possible, we'll give you notice so you can export your data first.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, United States, and disputes will be resolved in the courts located in Michigan, United States — except that if you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may also bring proceedings in your local courts where your local law gives you that right.

Before any formal dispute, please contact us first — most issues can be resolved quickly and informally.

General

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. If we don't enforce a provision, that isn't a waiver of it. You may not transfer this agreement to anyone else; we may transfer it as part of a reorganization or sale of the Service, and we'll notify you if that happens.

These terms are written in English, and the English version controls. Parts of the app's interface are available in other languages, but translations of these terms, if any, are provided for convenience only.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the Service evolves. We'll update the “Last updated” date, and for significant changes we'll give notice in the app or by email. Continuing to use the Service after changes means you accept them; if you don't agree with a change, you can stop using the Service and delete your account.
