Watch Helper Extension — Privacy

The Steps to Fluency — Watch helper is an optional browser extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge. It helps you bring a YouTube video's captions into your Steps to Fluency tab so you can study them as a reading lesson. This notice explains exactly what the extension does with your data; it supplements our main Privacy Policy, and anything it doesn't cover is governed by that policy.

What the extension does

When you press “Get transcript” on a Steps to Fluency Watch page, the extension reads that YouTube video's captions — from your own YouTube session, in your own browser — and hands them to your Steps to Fluency tab. You then study them like any other reading text.

What it accesses

To do that job, and only that job, the extension handles:

Video captions (text) — read and parsed on your device and placed into your own Steps to Fluency tab. The extension does not send caption text to us or to any third party.
The video's id and title — passed to your Steps to Fluency page, which records them to your watch history so you can return to the lesson. This stays within your own account, as described in our main policy.
Which video you are viewing — used only to load and record that lesson.

What it does not do

No ads, no analytics, no tracking of any kind.
It never sells or shares your data.
It does not download audio or video — only the text captions the video already provides.
It does not read your other tabs, your browsing history, your bookmarks, or any website other than youtube.com and Steps to Fluency.
It runs no remotely-hosted code; everything it does ships inside the extension.

The network requests it makes

To YouTube (www.youtube.com) — using the YouTube session already in your browser, to read the video's caption track. This is an ordinary same-site request; nothing goes to any third party.
To Steps to Fluency — a single request, with no account cookies attached, to check whether the Watch feature is currently switched on. It carries no personal data.

What it stores

The extension keeps only two short-lived values, in your browser's session storage, which are cleared when you close the browser:

counters that limit how often the feature runs, and
a brief cache of whether the feature is switched on.

It does not store your captions, your video history, or any personal information.

Your YouTube session

The extension uses the YouTube session already present in your browser — the same one you use when you watch a video yourself. It never creates, stores, or transmits your YouTube login details, and it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, YouTube or Google.
